Scaling a Historic Campaign for Meharry Medical College

Meharry Medical College is the pre-eminent HBCU Medical College in the United States. Meharry recently began celebrating its 150th anniversary of providing academic health services education primarily to people of color. In addition to its medical school, Meharry has a dental school, a global school of public health, a graduate school, and a school of applied computational sciences. 

Peter Fissinger, Principal of Fissinger Fundraising, has partnered with Meharry Medical College for over seven years on the planning and implementation of its $500 million “Meharry 150” campaign. Peter’s professional relationship with Meharry dates back to his prior affiliation with Campbell & Company, where he served as President and CEO for 15 years of his 29-year tenure at that firm.

Fissinger Fundraising now collaborates with Campbell & Company in providing campaign-related services to Meharry. Peter has been directly involved in campaign feasibility services, has served as Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement, and is currently lead counsel to Meharry in its campaign. He has worked directly with the President, with three Vice Presidents of Institutional Advancement, with the Board of Trustees and with volunteer campaign leadership. 

The Meharry 150 campaign was originally envisioned as a $150 million campaign in conjunction with the institution’s 150th anniversary. Due to the enormous generosity of key donors, the campaign goal has risen to $350 million and then $500 million. The campaign launched publicly in October 2025 having attained over $400 million toward its goal. Bloomberg Philanthropies has contributed over $200 million to Meharry during the course of its campaign.
